The Derry Parks & Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for our senior citizen community including exercise & fitness classes for those 50 years of age and better!

The following is a current list of fitness programs available. Programs that require a special registration form (or payment) will be noted. Registration forms are available through the attached link and in the Recreation office. Participation in any of the activities listed will require an Activity Waiver that can be completed or mailed to the Recreation office at 31 West Broadway, Derry, NH 03038. New forms are required each year in January. Please make sure to notify the department if any information should change of the course of the year.

Indoor/Outdoor Walking Program

Age Requirment 18+ (children in strollers are permitted on a case by case basis)
Morning and afternoon hours are available. Call the Recreation office for more information!

Walking is great for the body and spirit! Come by yourself or bring along a friend to participate in the walking program at Veterans Hall weekday mornings and afternoons. 

  1. Want to walk for fitness? 26 Laps around the gymnasium equal one (1) mile!
  2. Weather not optimal for outdoor walking? Our gymnasium is newly equipped with a fantastic heating and cooling system. The gym floors are well maintained and cleaned daily. 
  3. Want to make new friends? Currently our morning sessions have between 4-8 members but new comers are always welcome! 
  4. New to the program? All new participants are asked to fill out a waiver inside the office the first day they attend. 
  5. How much do we charge? This program is free of charge.

 

Staying Independent! Fall prevention, are you at Risk?Veterans Hall Gymnasium

Are you or a loved one at risk for falling? Stop by any time Monday through Friday from 8:00am-4:30pm to pick up information on fall prevention. During your visit sign up for one of our many fitness programs including RSVP Bone builders! This program helps to improve your balance and strength, one of the top four preventative measures! Looking for more information? We are happy to direct you to our partners at the NH Falls prevention taskforce, the Endowment for Health, Parkland Medical Center, and other community agencies.

Join exercise instructor Dawn Barnes! Instructor Dawn comes to us with experience in a multitude  of disciplines! She has taught at many of the surrounding Senior Centers and those who have been coming to her class in Derry have had fantastic reviews! There is currently no cost to this class.

Bone Builders (RSVP)

Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Age 55+ or better

Bone Builders is co-sponsored by RSVP and is excellent for building bone density, increasing muscular strength and balance, and preventing osteoporosis. Participants go through a series of weight training and balance exercises and must have a doctor's permission to attend. There is a suggested donation of $1.00 per class.

Adult Judo Program

Wednesdays from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
*Pre-registration is required*

Age 18+ (under 18 program is also available)

Students who join are first taught conditioning exercises, then how to roll and fall. From there, in a structured and supervised setting, students learn throws and ground techniques. Depending on age and rank, students are also taught strangles and arm bars.The United States Judo Association (USJA) nationally sanctions all ranks given. All students who join the Derry Judo Club must also be a member of the USJA and complete a photo waiver. USJA membership forms and photo waivers can be obtained at the Derry Parks & Recreation Office. For safety, participants are required to wear a long sleeve sweatshirt and sweatpants to class. 

Line Dancing- Beginners

Beginners Line Dancing is held on Wednesday mornings at Veterans Hall gymnasium and instructed by Sharon Dobbie. This class is perfect for seniors who have no or little knowledge of basic line dancing steps. There is a fee of $3.00 per class for Derry residents and $5.00 per class for non-residents.

Senior Golf LeagueHoodkroft Country Club

Did you know Hoodkroft Country Club offers a senior gold league? The Women’s Senior League meets on Tuesday mornings and the Men’s Senior League meets on Wednesdays! Line Dancing (intermediate/advanced)

Line Dancing is held on Friday mornings at Veterans Hall gymnasium and instructed by Sharon Dobbie. This class is considered an Intermediate Line Dancing class. There is a fee of $3.00 per class for Derry residents and $5.00 per class for non-residents.

Adult Tennis League

Alexander- Carr, Birch Street Courts
Wednesdays, 6:00PM- 9:30PM (May-September)

Age 18+ (Lessons available for under 18)
The Derry Parks & Recreation Department is offering an Adult Tennis League for beginner to intermediate players (NTRP 1.0 – 3.5). The league, led by Charlie Zoeller, will meet on Wednesday evenings, 6:00 – 9:30pm at the Alexander-Carr Tennis Courts located on Birch Street in Derry. 

FEES FOR SEASON: $20.00 per person

Tai Ji Quan: Moving for better balance

Age 62+

 

This class is an adapted Tai Ji Quan program that incorporates mini therapeutic movements to increase a person’s functional movement and balance, while decreasing the risk of falls. PickleBall (Indoor courts)SportZone

The SportsZone on A Street in Derry will be offering pickleball games indoors. The cost is $5.00 for three hours of open court time to play pickleball. The courts will be set up and nets and balls will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring paddles with them. For more information call (603) 425-8842. This FREE class is perfect for active older adults. The design of the class introduces easy to follow choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion, and coordination, while recreating the original Zumba moves you love at a lower-intensity.
