Battalion Chief Atwater serves as Shift Commander for Battalion #2 with the primary responsibility for command and control of daily emergency incidents and shift personnel management. Battalion Chief Atwater also coordinates recruitment and hiring of new personnel for the Department.

Battalion Chief Atwater began his career as a Paramedic in Syracuse, NY. He then worked 4 years as a Flight Paramedic with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team (DHART) before coming to the Derry Fire Department in 2005. He was promoted from Firefighter/Paramedic to Lieutenant in 2014.

Robert has served in several leadership roles to include new apparatus specifications and procurement, EMS CQI Committee Chairperson, oral board panel coordinator for new hire candidates, and assisted with EMS education and recertification of personnel. He was recognized by the New Hampshire Fire & EMS Committee of Merit as the EMS Provider of the Year in 2014, and Veteran of Foreign Wars Fire Officer of the Year in 2017. Further – he was named the National Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) of the Year by the Veteran of Foreign Wars in 2018.

Battalion Chief Atwater possesses a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Colgate University. He also holds numerous professional certifications that include Fire Officer I and II, Fire Instructor, Hazardous Materials Technician, Fire Inspector, and various technical rescue disciplines. Battalion Chief Atwater is one of only a handful of New Hampshire Fire Officers to receive his Fire Officer Designation through the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

Battalion Chief Rob Atwater resides in Rye, NH with his wife Krista and son Liam.
