Battalion Chief William Gillis is assigned as the shift commander of Battalion 3 with primary responsibilities of command and control of emergency incidents and shift personnel management. He oversees the following programs; tool and equipment, protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus. Battalion Chief Gillis also serves as the Deputy Director of Emergency Management for the Town.
Battalion Chief Gillis began his career with the Derry Fire Department in 1994; working as a paramedic, firefighter, and apparatus operator. In July 2000, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned to Fire Administration. While assigned to Fire Administration he was responsible for overseeing quality improvement for emergency medical service, media relations, as well as customer care. Battalion Chief Gillis played a key role in achieving CAAS (Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services) accreditation. In late 2002, he was assigned to the Operations Division as a company officer and in July 2015 he was promoted to Station Captain. He was promoted to Battalion Chief in January of 2017.
Battalion Chief Gillis holds a graduate degree (MA) in Operational Art and Military Science from Air University and a Graduate degree (MBA) in Leadership from Franklin Pierce University. He also holds an undergraduate degree (BS) in Nursing from Boston College. Battalion Chief Gillis is a graduate of the Executive Fire Officer Program (EFO) at the United States Fire Administration – National Fire Academy. Battalion Chief Gillis is a nationally registered Paramedic, certified Fire Officer, certified Hazardous Materials Technician, as well as a certified Fire Instructor.
