Recruiting & Hiring FAQ's

 
What are the minimum requirements to be hired?
  • Firefighter 1 (Pro Board or NH)
  • EMT (National Registry)
  • CPAT (Waived for Lateral Transfers)
Do you take laterals from other departments?
  • Absolutely, but to be considered a lateral, you must be full time with another NH fire department.
What are the benefits?

What is the hiring process?
  • It is a three step interview process followed by a state required background investigation, a pre-employment physical examination, & pre-employment drug screening.
Do you allow ride-alongs?
  • Yes, Ride-alongs and job shadowing are highly encouraged for prospective candidates. It will give you an opportunity to observe Fire/EMS activities to gain a better understanding of the duties and responsibilities of Derry Fire/EMS personnel. 
What is the schedule firefighters work?
  • 24/72 - 24 hours on duty followed by 72 hours off duty
If I have firefighter training from another state, will you accept that?
  • Yes, as long as it's Pro Board.
Is there a recruit school?
  • Yes. Recruit school is currently two weeks long and is day shifts.
Is there a probationary period?
  • Yes, new hires have a one year probation. Laterals from another NH fire department may be given a reduced probation.
